University of Iowa Dance Company (UIDC) Info & FAQs
What is UIDC?
UIDC is a touring repertory ensemble. It is an incredible way to learn what it is like to be in a dance company. Company members perform a variety of dances with a cohesive group of people in a home concert and tour regionally.
Who is eligible to audition?
UIDC is open to all undergraduate dance majors (sophomore-senior) and MFA candidates. For BFA students who began the degree in Fall 2025 or later, it is required to complete at least one semester before graduation. It is highly recommended to complete this requirement before senior year so it doesn’t conflict with the BFA capstone. Due to this requirement, BFA students will be prioritized for casting.
Auditions for UIDC & Dance Gala will be Tues, April 28th from 5:30-7:30
What is the time commitment?
UIDC will only operate in the spring; there are no fall commitments. There will be a rehearsal intensive with a guest choreographer the week before spring semester classes start. Then, rehearsals for all the pieces will take place for 2-3 hours each evening, Mon-Thurs. We will meet during our class period on Friday afternoons. You will not be cast in every piece, so there will be evenings off. The rehearsal schedule will be confirmed once casting and repertory is confirmed.
Our home concert is Feb 26 & 27. After this concert, evening rehearsals will end. We will then go on tour! We plan to perform at a maximum of 4 locations regionally. Dates and locations will be confirmed in Fall 2026.
Due to the intensive time period of rehearsals, UIDC members are not eligible to audition for Spring Thesis concerts. Dancers who choose to participate in a BFA capstone or Faculty Concert must communicate their UIDC time commitments clearly to the choreographers before accepting a role. UIDC will be expected to take priority for scheduling other rehearsals.
UIDC is a course you will register for in the Spring semester for 3 credit hours.
What is the repertory?
There will be 4 pieces that we rehearse and tour:
- 1 piece will be a piece by a faculty choreographer that premieres in Dance Gala 2026. The cast will be made up of UIDC dancers, who will perform it in the spring again. All dancers in this piece will be in UIDC. But not all UIDC company members will be in this piece.
- 1 piece will be a re-staging of a work that has premiered at UI which was choreographed by a student (undergrad or MFA)
- 1 piece will be a re-staging of a work by a UI alum OR another work by a current student. This piece will have an intensive rehearsal period the week before the spring semester starts and brush up rehearsals during the spring semester.
- 1 piece will be collaboratively devised for the full company under the direction of the UIDC director during class time.
