  • Barragan Piece: Thought by Thought
    • Number of Dancers: 9
    • Begins as a choreographic exploration that investigate into the depths of the present moment and the kaleidoscope of personal memories. With the ethereal threads of Tulving's theory intertwine into its fabric, inviting the audience on a journey through the labyrinth of human consciousness, where the boundaries between past, present, and future blur and dance becomes a transcendent language, speaking volumes of our shared human experience.
    • Memory is not a static source of past moments but a gateway to temporal realms both behind and beyond us. It is through memory's gentle guidance that we embark on journeys backward through time, retracing the steps of yesteryears, while simultaneously venturing forward, glimpsing the tapestry of tomorrow.
    • Yet, within the regress and flow of life, grief emerges as a poignant melody, resonating with the echoes of loss and longing. Anticipatory grief, a haunting prelude to the symphony of sorrow, defies conventional understanding, shrouding the present in the shadows of an imminent absence.
    • Through the gem of memory, we gather wisdom from the archives of our past, learning from triumphs and tribulations alike. This reservoir of experiences equips us to navigate the labyrinth of existence, discerning friend from foe, and mapping our course among the tumultuous sea of social interactions.
    • Thus, in the dilemma of our humanity, mental time travel emerges as both comfort and burden, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the fragility of our existence. In the interplay of memory and anticipation, we find comfort embracing the past and courage in the face of an uncertain tomorrow.
  • Duarte Piece: Untitled
    • Number of Dancers: 9-11
    • Theme: Quilombos*
    • *Quilombo, in colonial Brazil, a community organized by fugitive slaves. Quilombos were located in inaccessible areas and usually consisted of fewer than 100 people who survived by farming and raiding. The largest and most famous was Palmares, which grew into an autonomous republic and by the 1690s had 20,000 inhabitants. It owed its prosperity to abundant irrigated land and the abduction of slaves from Portuguese plantations. The abducted slaves were kept in bondage by the runaways. Several Portuguese and Dutch slave-hunting expeditions (bandeiras) attempted to destroy Palmares; one of these finally succeeded in 1694. (source: Encyclopedia Britannica)
  • Marrs Piece: O quanta, qualia
    • Number of Dancers: 4
    • This new choreographic work is a collaboration with composer Jacob Bancks of Augustana College (https://jbancks.com/) and violinst Sabrina Tabby of Atlys String Quartet (https://atlysmusic.com/). Four dancers will perform alongside Tabby, who will be integral the visual aspects of the performance.
    • This piece will engage with the philosophical concept of “qualia,” i.e., how individual sense experiences are distinct from the stimuli that evoke them. Qualia provides a lens through which we will research the integration and dis-integration of body and mind in movement and music. Dancers will investigate qualia and reflect on how sense experiences of movement may be distinct from movement itself. Their explorations of a key research question--"am I my body?"--will contribute directly to the choreographic process.
    • The chamber seating arrangement will further Marrs's choreographic interest in challenging the ballet genre’s emphasis on “frontness” and further foster the work's themes surrounding perception and reality.
  • Miracle Piece: If we have come this far, how do we get back
    • Number of Dancers: 5-7
    • A suite of 3 short dances (solo, trio, quartet) exploring the relationships between humans and animated objects (robots and remote controlled toys). In collaboration with colleagues from the School of Engineering, these short dances set a lush score of piano and percussion by John Arndt and Terrance F. Clark, will interestingly juxtapose human and machine by entangling their movements together.
    • Stephanie Miracle, Gala project description:
      • I am searching for 5 – 7 dancers to join me in an interdisciplinary creative process in collaboration with UI Mechanical Engineering Prof. and Director of the Robotics & Assistive Devices Laboratory (RAD Lab)  Deema Totah exploring kinetic and empathetic relationships between dancers and moving machines. What might a choreographic dialogue between performers and robots reveal to us about the capacity of bodies (human or nonhuman) to feel, think, and relate to the world through movement?
      • The piece will likely be structured as a suite - solo, trio, quintet.
