Audition Information for Dancers

Department of Dance – Audition Information for Dancers – Spring 2026

Two auditions are held per semester. One audition is held at the start of the semester, with the second after midterms.

  • Fall Semester:
    • First week: Departmental Auditions (fall semester productions, class projects)
    • Post-Midterms: Early spring semester productions (BFA Capstone Projects, Thesis Projects, Faculty Concert)
  • Spring Semester:
    • First week: Departmental Auditions (spring semester productions, class projects)
    • Post-Midterms: Dance Gala and UIDC Auditions for upcoming academic year

 

Audition Times (changes as of Spring 2026):

  • Auditions are held on a weeknight after classes end for the day.
  • 5-5:25pm: Warmup time
  • 5:25pm: Check in with the PSM to get your dance number
  • 5:30-7:30pm: Auditions
    • Please note there is only one time block for auditions. All events take place in the Gym studio at Halsey Hall.
    • Dancers who cannot attend in person but would like to be considered for casting can list their names in the signup document.

 

Signing Up for Auditions:

  • Audition information, including links to the signup and the audition survey will be distributed via email, posted on the online callboard, and posted on the Halsey callboard near the main office.
  • To sign up for auditions:
    • Type your name beside the number you want. The form will auto-save.
    • If you cannot attend auditions in person, please put your name on the list of dancers who want to be considered for casting.
    • After signing up, fill out the audition survey. If you need to change or update your responses, please fill out the form again and put the number 2 by your name to indicate which response should be shared with the choreographers.

 

Casting Information:

  • The casting session will be held from 7:30-8:30pm directly following auditions.
  • Choreographers looking to cast a work should reach out to the PSM to sign up.
  • Cast Lists will be announced within one week from the day of auditions.
    • Cast Lists will be sent via email and posted to the online and Halsey callboards.
    • Dancers have 24 hours from posting to accept or decline casting.
      • Dancers should reach out directly to choreographers to accept or decline.
    • Dancers are responsible for providing conflict information and keeping their choreographer updated on new conflicts.
      • Dancers should not accept casting if they are already involved in a production with a conflicting schedule (example: Theatre New Play Festival and Grad Concert). Please discuss any potential casting with choreographers/directors if you are considering multiple productions.
  • Hillary will send information to each cast about signing up for performance credit.

  • A signup form will be sent via email.
    • If you are casting more than one piece, please put each piece on its own row.
    • Choreographers with similar styles will be asked to select one representative to present a phrase at the auditions.
  • Additional information will be sent by the PSM and Director of Dance Production via email to everyone signed up to cast a piece.
  • The Director of Dance Production or other assigned faculty member will organize how the audition time is shared.

At the Auditions and Casting Meeting:

  • Choreographers should arrive ten minutes early to check in with the PSM and DDP and receive any instructions and paperwork.
    • The PSM will bring printouts of the signup list for each choreographer.
  • The casting spreadsheet will be sent via email by the start of auditions. This spreadsheet is shared between choreographers, the DDP, and the PSM. Please keep information in the spreadsheet confidential as it includes the responses to the dancer audition survey.
    • Choreographers should list their casting preferences in the Cast List tab.
      • The PSM will import preferences into the Casting Breakdown tab to make it easier to identify overlaps in casting.
    • This spreadsheet will be used during the casting meeting to facilitate discussions.

 

Cast List Announcement:

  • All cast lists will be shared at the same time. This will happen via email, the online callboard, and the physical callboard at Halsey.
    • Choreographers should inform the PSM when their cast list is finalized and ready for sharing. Please indicate if any information (such as secondary cast options) should not be shared.
    • Unless another preference is indicated by the choreographer, cast lists will be listed in alphabetical order by last name of the dancer.
    • Dancers should reach out directly to the choreographers to accept or decline casting. If you have not heard from a dancer within the 24-hour window, please inform the PSM and DDP.
  • Cast List changes: Please inform the PSM and Hillary of any changes to the cast list from the announcement email.
