Intimacy & Physical Contact Breakdown

This breakdown covers all instances of supportive, friendly, and romantic touch that require choreography.

  • Act I, Scene 1
    • Characters: Gabriel & Nathaniel
    • Description: "GABRIEL helps NATHANIEL move his luggage onto a bench."
    • Nature of Touch: Supportive & Welcoming. This is the first physical contact in the play. It's a simple, kind gesture that establishes Gabriel's helpful nature and initiates their connection.
  • Act I, Scene 3
    • Characters: Gabriel & Nathaniel
    • Description: "GABRIEL slides into the seat next to NATHANIEL looking at what he's working on."
    • Nature of Touch: Familiar & Proximate. This action shows their growing friendship and comfort. Gabriel intentionally closes the physical space between them in a casual but intimate way.
  • Act I, Scene 4
    • Characters: Nathaniel & Gabriel
    • Description: "Both boys share a moment of genuine excitement embracing for a moment before both realize how close they are. They quickly separate."
    • Nature of Touch: Romantic & Tense. This is the play's first explicitly romantic touch. It begins as a spontaneous, joyous celebration but quickly becomes charged with unspoken romantic tension, leading to an awkward separation.
  • Act I, Scene 7
    • Characters: Gabriel & Nathaniel
    • Description: "GABRIEL grabs NATHANIEL and kisses him... NATHANIEL, though surprised at first, continues to kiss in a moment of pure passion."
    • Nature of Touch: Romantic, Passionate, & Initiating. This is the most significant moment of intimacy in the play. It requires careful choreography for three distinct actions:
      • The initial grab by Gabriel to initiate the kiss.
      • The mutual, passionate kiss.
      • The moment Nathaniel gives in and participates in the kiss.

Fight/Violence & Forceful Contact Breakdown

This breakdown covers all instances of playful fighting, physical struggles, and overt violence that require fight choreography.

  • Act I, Scene 1
    • Characters: Gabriel & Don
    • Description: After a verbal jab, "DON drops his book bag on the ground ready to fight. GABRIEL returns the gesture and the two boys play fight for a moment."
    • Nature of Contact: Playful & Brotherly. This is a moment of friendly roughhousing that establishes their long-standing, comfortable friendship. It should be choreographed to look energetic but not actually malicious.
  • Act I, Scene 7
    • Characters: Don & Nathaniel
    • Description: The scene opens with "DON pulling NATHANIEL into the hallway." Nathaniel says, "Will you let go of me?"
    • Nature of Contact: Urgent & Forceful. This is not a violent act, but a forceful one. Don physically pulls his friend to get his immediate and undivided attention for an urgent matter.
  • Act I, Scene 7
    • Characters: Don & Gabriel
    • Description: "DON re-enters struggling to bring GABRIEL out."
    • Nature of Contact: Supportive & Forceful. This action requires the actor playing Don to physically maneuver a drunk and unsteady Gabriel. It's a mix of helping a friend who can't walk straight and forcing him out of a situation.
  • Act I, Scene 7
    • Characters: Nathaniel & Gabriel
    • Description: "...after a brief moment, NATHANIEL pushes away realizing what is happening."
    • Nature of Contact: Rejecting & Forceful. Immediately following their passionate kiss, Nathaniel shoves Gabriel away. This is an act of physical rejection born from fear and self-revulsion.
  • Act II, Scene 1
    • Characters: Don & Nathaniel
    • Description: "NATHANIEL reaches for the book. The two boys struggle and a few pages are torn out. NATHANIEL gets the book."
    • Nature of Contact: Struggle & Desperation. This is a physical struggle over a key object (the journal). It should be choreographed to show Nathaniel's desperation to reclaim his privacy and Don's determination to hold onto it.
  • Act II, Scene 3
    • Characters: Nathaniel & Gabriel
    • Description: "NATHANIEL punches GABRIEL." "NATHANIEL hits GABRIEL again. This time knocking GABRIEL to his knees." "NATHANIEL starts beating GABRIEL. GABRIEL tries to fight back, but isn't as strong..."
    • Nature of Contact: Violent Assault. This is the play's climax of violence. It is not a fight between equals; it is a brutal, one-sided beating. It requires careful fight choreography to ensure actor safety while portraying the shocking and tragic nature of Nathaniel's attack on Gabriel.
